Synopsis:
Old habits never change.
On Opin, a fledgling colony world only a few years settled, Reef is a labourer on the New Prussia Transcontinental Railroad.
Turns out the New Frontier dream was too good to be true; working for the company is a long slog living hand to mouth, odds of surviving dangerous working conditions worse than he’d bargained for.
So instead of working for a year before receiving a plot of land for his efforts, he decides to start dealing on the side. Chem sells itself; experience from the old arcologies on Earth had shown him that.
Out on the frontier though, the players are different, everyone wanting a slice of this new world. When Reef starts dealing Nulla to other workers, he finds he’s in with those desperate to make a place to call their own. And with poor conditions on the railroad stirring up unrest, he begins to realise just how the dark underbelly of this new realm reaches everyone.
He went to Opin to get away from past mistakes; but old habits never change.

Review:
I received a copy of Depths by Richard Gregory in exchange for a fair and honest review. I must say that this is an impressive debut. I was immediately drawn in by prose and the flawed characters. Gregory has an impressive imagination and a true gift for creating characters that are realistic and relatable. There were some formatting issues in the book, but that is nothing that a good editor or formatter couldn't iron out. Overall, I was impressed with Depths and I must applaud him for a job well done.
