Review: Out of Darkness by Jason D. Morrow

Out of Darkness
The Starborn Saga #1

Five out of Five Stargates: Out of this world!

Nineteen-year-old Mora is on a mission to save her village from the relentless greyskins, and there is only one man that can help her, Jeremiah of Screven. As she travels the wastelands, she discovers a power within herself, a power she believes no other human possesses. That is, until she meets others like her – the ones who call themselves the Starborn. These super-humans are on a mission also: to destroy the undead greyskins, and take down the greedy Jeremiah. Mora must now choose between the one who can keep her family safe, and those that can show her who she truly is.

An action-packed thriller from the very start! This book starts off intense and never lets up. Like Mora, you have no idea who to trust and what the right thing to do is. There's never a dull moment as Mora sets off on her journey to find protection for her colony from the greyskins. There's always the sense that something more is going on under the surface and that sinking feeling never lets up.

I love that this book has zombies and supernatural powers. It's like Jason D. Morrow is asking the question of what would happen if the X-Men were faced with the zombie apocalypse before they truly understood their powers, and the answer is a really intense and addictive book. I wasn't a big fan of the love triangle, but it formed a little quickly for my liking. Totally understandable given the way people are forced to live their lives now in a post-apocalyptic world, but it made it a bit hard to root for either guy. Especially when Mora's actions don't even make sense to her (which isn't too far fetched for a 19 year old).

The question is always who to trust, and I really appreciate that Mora isn't the naive heroine joining a cause because a cute boy bats his eyes at her or makes an impassioned speech to win her over. She constantly asks questions and reminds herself that she is choosing the lesser of two evils--not necessarily the side she believes in, but the side that is more likely to help her get back to her people and family to protect them. She might get distracted here and there, but that motivation to protect her colony from the greyskins never wavers. There's a very natural progression as she starts to see each side for what they are and the secrets they hide. And I really can't wait to see those secrets unravel as the series goes on.
